5 Steps to Supercharge Your Conveyancing Career

Are you ready to elevate your conveyancing career? The conveyancing industry is fast-paced, competitive and frequently changing, which means continuous learning and professional growth are essential.

Are you ready to elevate your conveyancing career? The conveyancing industry is fast-paced, competitive and frequently changing, which means continuous learning and professional growth are essential. In a recent webinar co-hosted by NBIA and the Australian Institute of Conveyancers (AIC) five clear and actionable steps were identified to help students of conveyancing, and those new to the industry, take control of their career trajectory.

Step 1: Master the Fundamentals

A solid grounding in conveyancing law and procedures is the foundation of a successful Conveyancer. You can’t escape knowing the basics – and knowing them really well! Conveyancing is a complex legal process that requires expert knowledge, accurate research and reporting, and timely coordination of all parties involved.

“Understanding legal principles and contracts is essential” — Jodie Rasic, AIC Victoria.

NBIA’s conveyancing courses are designed with practicality in mind to ensure all students receive the most accurate and updated information required. As a student of conveyancing, you must:

· Stay up to date with legislative changes.

· Deepen your knowledge of complex legal concepts.

· Use NBIA’s learning resources, trainers/ assessors and your keen researching skills to stay informed and confident.

Step 2: Build Your Professional Network

Networking is one of the fastest ways to open new doors in your career. The old adage ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ is still alive and well in the legal industry and should be used to your advantage when building a career. Learning from those ahead of you in the industry is also an ongoing undertaking that you should consider part of your professional development. Here are some ways to start your networking:

· Join your state or territory’s AIC to connect with mentors and peers.

· Engage in NBIA’s Facebook discussion groups and ‘drop-in sessions’ with trainers and other students to build support systems.

· Use networking to exchange referrals and create business opportunities in your local community.

“Networking can connect you with individuals willing to offer support when you need it most.” — Kerry Lew, NBIA.

Step 3: Hone Your Communication and Client Management Skills

Conveyancers do more than process transactions—they manage people through some of the most stressful moments of their lives. A property is typically the largest asset anyone will buy, and it can be a very challenging and emotionally charged process.

As Jodie explains, “Conveyancers wear many hats, including a psychology hat.”

That means your role includes:

· Softening clients’ nerves and stresses.

· Explaining complex legal issues in simple terms.

· Building confidence and trust through consistent, clear communication.

Strong client relationships are built not just on knowledge, but also on empathy and reassurance.

Step 4: Embrace Technology and Innovation

Technology has transformed the conveyancing industry over the last decade, taking it from a face to face, paper-based, profession to one with tech at its core. If you refuse to embrace and leverage it, you will be left behind. Data research and consumer insights, collaborative tools and transparency, speed and compliance have all been enhanced, meaning conveyancing transactions and the workflow of a conveyancer have been positively affected.

Examples of some of the conveyancing technology you should embrace include:

· E-conveyancing platforms: PEXA reduces paperwork and streamlines settlements.

· Security tools: VPNs ensure safe remote access, especially for trust accounts.

· Task & diary systems: Use tools like Google Calendar, Outlook, Trello, or Asana to manage deadlines.

· Client communication: Systems like LEAP and Tri Convey keep clients updated in real time.

· Remote work flexibility: Secure Wi-Fi and time-zone planning keep you productive from anywhere.

NBIA integrates PEXA, Xero, MYOB, and LEAP into its conveyancing training courses, so graduates are job-ready.

“Scheduling emails to send during Australian business hours keeps professionalism intact, no matter where you are.” — Jodie Rasic

Step 5: Seek Mentorship and Continuous Learning

The best conveyancers never stop learning. As with any profession, a conveyancer must stay up to date with changes in process and legal requirements pertaining to their work. Thankfully there is an active industry body for conveyancers in Australia – the AIC - that makes this ongoing mentorship and professional development easily accessible.

· Engage in professional development opportunities regularly.

· Attend AIC events and webinars to stay relevant.

· Leverage mentors for career guidance and industry insights. · Ask NBIA about their Internship Program to gain real-life industry experience.

“Be curious in your role as a conveyancer—continuous learning is vital.” — Jodie Rasic

Regulatory changes are on the horizon. Soon, conveyancers will be required to complete ongoing professional development to meet points/hours criteria, just as finance professionals do. Visit your state or territory’s AIC for the latest requirements or contact NBIA Student Support to access exclusive AIC student discount memberships.
